Jay S. Fishman to Lecture at Baruch

Baruch College invites you to meet Jay S. Fishman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Travelers Companies, Inc. on March 21, as part of the Burton Kossoff Business Leadership Lecture Series.

Fishman will be participating in a conversation moderated by David Birdsell, Dean of Baruch’s School of Public Affairs, regarding relevant business topics and his career experiences. The free event is scheduled at 12:30 p.m. in the Rackow Conference Room, room 750 of the College’s Information Technology and Library Building, 151 East 25th Street (between Lexington and Third Avenues).

Each year, Baruch hosts prominent business leaders to share perspectives on pressing issues in business and enable the Baruch community to gain insight into the qualities and strategies of today’s most successful business leaders. The Burton Kossoff Business Leadership Lecture Series was created in August 2003 by Phyllis L. Kossoff in memory of her husband Burton, a Baruch alumnus, who was the founder and CEO of Burton Packaging Co., Inc,. an officer of the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Greater New York, and a Trustee Emeritus of the Baruch College Fund.

Travelers is a leading provider of property casualty insurance and one of 30 major U.S. companies that comprise the Dow Jones Industrial Average.  Travelers offers a wide range of property and casualty insurance products and services to businesses, organizations, and individuals in the United States and selected international markets

Mr. Fishman joined Travelers as Chief Financial Officer in 1993. He was named President and Chief Executive Officer of Travelers in 1998 and Chairman in 2000. In October 2001, he became Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of The St. Paul Companies, and when The St. Paul Companies and Travelers merged in 2004, he became Chief Executive Officer of the combined company. In 2005, he also was named Chairman.

He is a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania, a member of the board of overseers of the School of Veterinary Medicine, and a member of the Industry Advisory Board of the Financial Institutions Center at The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He also is chairman of The Travelers/Wharton Partnership for Risk Management and Leadership. 

Mr. Fishman also serves on the boards of the Carlyle Group and ExxonMobil Corporation and is an active member of The Business Council. In addition, he is chairman of the board of the New York City Ballet, a trustee of New York-Presbyterian Hospital and a vice chairman of the Corporate Fund Board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
